LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Usually this time of year, we don't want to see the Grinch, but that was the theme of a very special Christmas party in the Portland neighborhood on Saturday.
Local organization, It takes a Village 502, hosted the holiday event it called "Welcome to Whoville."
Kids given "golden tickets" received toys, candy bags, and coats - all thanks to local sponsors. There were also lots of balloons, face-painting, crafts and pictures with The Grinch. Santa also made an appearance.
For the first two years, community members funded the event out of their own pockets, but now they've formed a non-profit and there is more support for the event, so more children are benefitting.
"It just means a lot for this community because we know growing up here how this neighborhood, the children, how everybody is affected by things that is happening outside. We just want to give them a safe place inside to just be a kid," said co-organizer Latasha Pitteard.
About 150 children took part in the event.
