LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Zoneton Fire District is encouraging people to take proper precautions when exploring the outdoors this spring.
The fire department in Bullitt County responded to incidents on Sunday that involved outdoor activities in remote areas.
Emergency crews first responded to recovery a vehicle that had gone into a lake. The driver of the vehicle safely escaped after the transmission shifted into neutral near the water.
Zoneton Fire encourages people to check the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration's website to see if their vehicle has applicable recalls.Â
Crews then responded to help a hiker who had a medical emergency. The person wasn't able to move after being in a remote area. Zoneton Fire said the hiker wasn't alone and his companion called 911.
Zoneton Fire said it's important to know how to send a location on a smartphone to other people.
"As the weather warms, more folks will be exploring, kayaking and enjoying other activities in remote area," Zoneton Fire said. "Please remember these safety things: Use the buddy system, be sure smart phones are fully charged, practice sending your location to another phone user, have plenty of water and know your limits."
Fire officials said if someone is lost or injured, it's better to call 911 sooner rather than later.
