I don't think it's good when families argue in front of company so I decided to wait until our Derby guests left town before bringing this up.
It is such a shame that unsupervised kids fighting and misbehaving forced the Kentucky Derby Festival to shut Fest-a-Ville down an hour earlier than planned last week. It's so discouraging for the hundreds of volunteers who try to make KDF events fun and memorable and nice. It's horrible for vendors who work so hard trying to make a living down there.
I know teenagers can be hard to control, especially ones who have not had strong guidance. But right now may be the last chance you have to get them under control and guide them into a productive adulthood. The people who fight the system always seem to lose at life. The people who follow the rules, who are respectful, who try to make things nicer than the way they found them are the ones who succeed. But future success for these kids requires your adult supervision now.
For years, we've run a message at the beginning of our news that says, "It's 10 o'clock. Do you know where your children are? You should!" That isn't for other parents. That's for you. If you have teenagers running around outside and you don't know where they are, that message is for you!
I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my Point of View.
