Since before Christmas, mail service in Louisville has been delayed, inconsistent or down right unavailable. People are still getting Christmas cards this week that were mailed in mid-December.

Through it all, the Louisville postmaster, Shoca Moore, has remained steadfast in refusing to talk to us or explain anything. Which means she doesn't want YOU to know what caused this mess, when it started, when it will end or what she is doing to make sure it doesn't happen again.

That last part is the most important. Her refusal to stand up and give us answers tells me she doesn't have a clue how to prevent it again.

I would suggest you send Ms. Moore a letter and demand an explanation, except it probably wouldn't get to her until August.

Public leaders, paid and supported by taxpayers, have an obligation to be accountable to us. Hiding and refusing to comment is not how real leaders lead. It's cowardly and ineffective and makes the situation worse. Real leaders get in front of problems. They communicate with their stakeholders. If she had been transparent with us, we might have been more understanding. Now we're just angry that part of an American institution is failing us and they won't tell us why.

There's an old adage that applies directly to Ms. Moore right now: Lead, follow or get out of the way.
