Teachers at 17 Jefferson County Public Schools are losing district stipends for educators at high-needs schools, leaving some facing thousands of dollars in lost pay just days before the school year begins.

Principal Uriah Tolbert said Indian Trail Elementary School is taking a back-to-basics approach after noticing a slide in reading and math levels at the school.

The $62 million, 185,000-square-foot facility on Poplar Level Road will serve more than 1,000 boys in grades 6 through 12.

Dr. Brian Yearwood said he believes the best way to lead is by listening and being present in schools. He also stressed the importance of attendance. 

Several important topics were scheduled for discussion. 

At Tuesday night's board meeting, JCPS said it needs at least 60 drivers to restore routes for the schools it is considering.

Christopher 2X Game Changers announced the 2024 Children's Inspirational Award on Saturday. The award honors children who participate in the nonprofit's programming.

In one week, over 96,000 Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) students will head back to school.

The agreement comes weeks after TARC said it plans to reduce routes and lay off as many as 70 drivers as part of a cost-cutting move.
