New JCPS superintendent visits schools to connect with students and staff

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood spent his second day on the job visiting several schools across the district, including Semple Elementary and Churchill Park School.

“You know, this marks day number two, and I'm just immersing myself in the excitement,” Yearwood said. “You know, I asked children today, I said, ‘How is your day going?’ And everyone [was] off doing great, having a great time.”

At Semple Elementary, Yearwood was greeted with high-fives and smiles from students and staff.

“It is such an honor,” said Semple Elementary Principal Danielle Randele. “I was super happy that the staff was excited about having him here. The kids were excited, and it's just an honor to have him visit us, especially the first couple days of school.”

Yearwood also visited Churchill Park School, which serves students with a range of special needs.

“Our kiddos always love visitors, but having somebody new, especially like Dr. Yearwood today, it was just really fun for them,” said Churchill Park Principal Krissy Lee.

Yearwood said he believes the best way to lead is by listening and being present in schools.

“That's where the magic happens. That's where my heart is, and that's the exciting part of here,” he said. “My office, that's a boring place. In the schools, that's where it really needs to happen with children.”

He also made a request to parents to ensure students attend school regularly.

“We need every child in a seat,” Yearwood said. “It's important because for us to have a quality educational experience for your child, we need them in seat. We need them in school. So please, please, please.”

Yearwood said he plans to continue visiting schools next week and eventually hopes to visit every school in the district.
