The contest, which opens Thursday, will have three drawings on Sept. 9, Sept. 23 and Oct. 7.

“I don't know that any of us actually believe we'll be 100% wide-open by state fair,” said Dr. Mark Lynn, the fair board’s chairman. “But if we plan for it, it's easier to make it smaller than bigger.”
House Bill 518 shifts appointing authority of the fair board from Beshear, a Democrat, to Republican Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles and strips the governor's ability to name a chairperson.
The fair board unanimously agreed to renew Kentucky Venues president and CEO David Beck’s contract in April, but the Kentucky Finance and Administration Cabinet has not signed off on it days before it expires.
Mike Berry will be replaced as president by Matt Gibson, who has been with the Kentucky Derby Festival since 1997.
Mike Berry, the current chief executive, plans to retire in October.
