Monkeypox is a highly infectious disease that has spread rapidly across the country since the first case was discovered in May.

Health officials say the risk of infection is still low, but some segments of the population may be more at risk.

Only a small number of vaccines were made available for use in Kentucky due to the low number of monkeypox cases statewide. 

According to the CDC, there has been no recorded cases of monkeypox in Kentucky so far. 

Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness reported that there are now eight total cases in the area.

The Floyd County Health Department received a small amount of the JYNNEOS vaccine, enough to vaccinate 10 to 15 people.

Locally, doctors hope that will mean more resources headed their way.
