LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Law of Averages is primed to clobber me. It has to be.
I don’t believe I’ve ever survived a college football season when I’ve picked more winners than losers, with the exception of a year when I let my 6-year-old son pick the games for me.
And my son is no longer 6. In fact, both of my grandsons are older than 6. It’s been awhile and a lot of losing seasons.
But after going 5-0 in Week 4 of this college football season and following it with another perfect Saturday last weekend, I’m hesitant to pick another game. Let’s just end it here and call it a wonderful year.
Or I can cross my fingers and hope to avoid the inevitable 0-5.
Here goes.
Wagering recap:
Crawford: 2-3 last week, but he broke even because he bet an extra $25 on Indiana to cover and win. Overall, he is 13-12 with a bankroll of $1,225 after starting with $1,000.
Bozich: 5-0 last week, winning $160. Overall, I’m 15-10 with a bankroll of $1,130, making money on the original imaginary $1,000.
Week Six Games
1. SMU (+7) at Louisville, Saturday, Noon.
Crawford: I like Louisville to cover the 7 at home against SMU. I think this game will be high scoring, but I’ve already been burned once by Louisville at home. Not betting against the Cardinals again. ($50 on Louisville).
Bozich: Remember what happened to Louisville last year the Saturday after the Cardinals played Notre Dame? They lost at Pitt. Some bettors believe the post-ND letdown factor is legit. That factor and a talented SMU offense lead me to the Mustangs for $25.
2. Indiana (-13 1/2) at Northwestern, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
Crawford: The 5-0 Curt Cignetti train can’t keep rolling like this, can it? It will slow down at some point, but I don’t think that will be this weekend at Northwestern. ($50 on Indiana).
Bozich: The Hoosiers have lost 8 straight in Evanston. They’ve been unable to come home from the Chicago suburbs with a win since 1993. The Wildcats are coming into the game following an off week. They play solid defense. Indiana wins but does not cover, but only for $20.
3. Clemson (-14 1/2) at Florida State, Saturday, 7 p.m.
Crawford: Florida State seems cooked to me. I like Clemson to cover. ($125 on Clemson)
Bozich: ESPN must have thought these two teams were playing for the Atlantic Coast Conference title when they booked this game for prime time. FSU is playing to avoid a losing season. Clemson is playing to make the national playoff — and knows it must win with gusto to score PR points. Give me the Tigers for $50.
4. Missouri (+2) at Texas A&M, Saturday, Noon.
Crawford: Missouri is a tough one to figure. Texas A&M is tough at home, but I like the Tigers with the two points. ($25 on Missouri)
Bozich: Missouri squeaked past Boston College and then did it again against Vanderbilt. A&M was not great against Arkansas. When in doubt, go with the home team playing in front of more than 100,000 fans. A&M for $25.
5. Ole Miss at South Carolina, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
Crawford: Ole Miss rebounds with a vengeance. Even in Columbia, I’d expect Ole Miss to get the offense rolling again. ($25 on Ole Miss).
Bozich: South Carolina beat Kentucky by 25 and Kentucky beat Ole Miss by 3, which means Gamecocks by four touchdowns, right? I think Ole Miss will bounce back from a terrible performance because the Rebels cannot afford another loss if they expect to make the national playoffs. Give me the Rebels for for only $20.
