LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Trinity's Zane Johnson and Jake Castelluzzo connected for a touchdown in a win over rival St. Xavier to take home First Down Friday's Play of the Week for Week 6.
In one of many highlights for the Shamrocks in their 45-10 rout of the Tigers, Johnson rolled out off of a play-action fake and fired a tough pass in a tight window to Castelluzzo, who kept his concentration for a touchdown.Â
It was part of a run that really cemented a rivalry win for Trinity, as the Shamrocks had just forced a Tiger turnover after already scoring on offense during the previous possession.
"We had just scored the play before, so we really had momentum going in to score the next play," Johnson said. "It was very, very great."
"I thought he wasn't going to throw the ball to me," Castelluzzo said. "I looked at him for about two seconds and I said, 'Just please throw the ball to me.' And he found me, I caught it and held on. I was just overfilled with emotions."
"It was a really surreal moment. I just looked at the student section, got them rowdy and then we just kept playing and we kept rolling."
Johnson could look back on his four-touchdown performance as a breakout game. He is only a freshman and starting at quarterback for one of the most high-profile programs in Kentucky.
"I talked to him a little bit going into that game," Trinity head coach Jay Cobb said. "There's two ways kids go into that game: You either embrace it, and I always tell him look around. Take it all in and embrace it. Embrace that atmosphere or you can go in there and be intimidated by it. And he obviously embraced it, went in there and played."
"I'm getting a lot more comfortable," Johnson said. "I didn't think it was going to be as easy as I thought. I was going to be in high school and I thought I was in for a rude awakening. But it's been easier than I thought."
"He's a coach's kid and I think that helps," Cobb said. "He's been around it his whole life. And I think that always helps a kid coming in and playing."
Trinity now goes to face a different St. Xavier, one out of Cincinnati. Both teams are 3-3 this season.
"We know we got our hands full," Cobb said. "We do each and every week. We aren't talented enough to show up and just phone it in. We've got to play, so we got to go up there and have the right mindset."
