LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Indiana General Assembly unanimously approved a resolution calling for a stretch of State Road 45 near Indiana University's Assembly Hall to be renamed in honor of Hall of Fame basketball coach Bob Knight.
Under the resolution, the portion of State Road 45 between Fee Lane and College Avenue would carry Knight's name. The roadway runs north of Indiana University's athletic fields and adjacent to Assembly Hall.
The measure was sponsored by state Rep. Peggy Mayfield, R-Martinsville, whose district includes parts of Johnson, Morgan and Monroe counties.

Because the resolution passed both chambers of Indiana's legislature, the Indiana Department of Transportation can move forward with the roadway designation. Legislative resolutions do not require approval from the governor.
Knight led Indiana's men's basketball program from 1971-2000, winning three national championships. The fiery coach was fired before the 2000-01 season after a confrontation with an IU student, despite having been placed on a “zero tolerance” policy by the university. He later coached at Texas Tech before retiring from the sport. Knight died in 2023 at the age of 83.
The road designation is among several efforts in Bloomington to recognize Knight. No timeline for signage installation or an official dedication has been announced.
