LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Pat Kelsey’s latest addition to the Louisville basketball staff brings a little bit of everything.
Kelsey announced Friday that Sean Dixon will join the Cardinals as associate head coach, adding an assistant with ACC experience, a strong recruiting reputation and a background on both sides of the ball.
Dixon arrives after four seasons at Clemson, where he was part of a stretch that included 98 wins, three NCAA Tournament appearances and an Elite Eight run in 2023-24. Over the past two seasons, Clemson ranked among the nation’s top 25 in defensive efficiency, according to KenPom.

Kelsey praised Dixon as a coach with broad value.
“Sean is the total package as a coach,” Kelsey said in a statement. “He is an outstanding teacher, game tactician, recruiter and relationship builder with a magnetic presence.”
Dixon’s path also gives Louisville a coach who has worked in several different roster-building environments.
Before Clemson, he spent four seasons at Middle Tennessee and five at UNC Asheville, both under head coach Nick McDevitt. At Asheville, Dixon built a reputation as a recruiter and helped the program sustain success even as key players transferred up and flourished at the high-major level.
Kelsey referenced those battles from his own time at Winthrop, when Asheville had emerged as one of the Big South’s toughest programs.
“With Sean as the lead recruiter, six players in a four-year span left Asheville and went on to thrive at the high major level,” Kelsey said. “Each year, I would be relieved when they lost one and then they would replace them with someone better.”
That history appears to be part of the appeal for Kelsey, whose Louisville staff continues to navigate a college basketball landscape driven by transfer portal evaluation, roster retention and fast-moving recruiting cycles.
Kelsey also noted Dixon’s versatility, saying his work at Asheville and Middle Tennessee leaned more offensive, while his role at Clemson emphasized defense.
“We are extremely fortunate to have him,” Kelsey said.
Dixon said Louisville’s tradition and Kelsey’s track record made the opportunity an easy one to embrace.
“I’m ecstatic to join Coach Kelsey and his staff, and I’m thrilled to be a Louisville Cardinal,” Dixon said in a statement. “Louisville’s rich basketball tradition speaks for itself, and I have firsthand knowledge of just how intimidating the KFC Yum! Center is for opponents. Coach Kelsey has won at every stop of his career, and I’m excited to join the staff and help him continue to build a championship program.”
Dixon’s coaching career began at his alma mater, Presbyterian, where he returned as an assistant after a standout playing career. A two-time team captain, he scored 1,106 career points and earned all-conference honors three times while helping the Blue Hose to back-to-back 20-win seasons.
