Racing Louisville FC exploring minority investment as NWSL growth accelerates, ESPN reports

Louisville-based Soccer Holdings LLC is reportedly seeking an equity partner while maintaining local control of the club.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Racing Louisville FC ownership is exploring the sale of a minority stake in the club as the National Women's Soccer League continues its rapid financial growth, according to a report Tuesday from ESPN.

Citing multiple sources familiar with the situation, ESPN reported Soccer Holdings LLC — the ownership group chaired by John Neace — has begun formally exploring additional investment opportunities to help Racing Louisville remain competitive as spending across the league escalates.

According to the report, there is no prospective buyer currently identified, and Racing Louisville officials stressed the club isn't for sale in the traditional sense. ESPN reported Neace isn't interested in giving up controlling ownership or relocating the franchise from Louisville.

Instead, the organization is reportedly seeking an equity partner and additional capital.

"As the NWSL experiences unprecedented growth, Soccer Holdings is constantly evaluating strategic opportunities to ensure Racing Louisville has the resources to compete at the highest level," the club said in a statement provided to ESPN. "We're coming off the club's first-ever trip to the playoffs and have assembled a competitive young roster that just last weekend knocked off the league's first-place team. We believe in Racing's future and invite our community to join us at Lynn Family Stadium in support of Louisville's only top-tier professional team."

Racing Louisville began play in 2021 after paying an expansion fee reportedly under $2 million. Since then, franchise values across women's soccer have exploded alongside surging media rights deals, attendance growth in several markets and increasing investor interest in the NWSL.

ESPN cited recent valuations from Sportico and Forbes that placed Racing Louisville's value between $127 million and $140 million, though still among the lower-valued clubs in the league.

The report also noted that a Columbus ownership group recently agreed to pay a reported $205 million expansion fee for the NWSL's 18th franchise.

Racing Louisville shares Lynn Family Stadium with Louisville City FC and, more recently, the UFL's Louisville Kings. While Louisville City has continued to post strong attendance figures, Racing Louisville reportedly averaged around 5,500 fans per match last season, the lowest average attendance in the 14-team league.

Still, the club reached the NWSL playoffs for the first time in 2025 after four consecutive ninth-place finishes.

ESPN also reported NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman is aware of the situation. Berman has previously described franchise relocation as a "last resort" for the league, emphasizing the importance of teams remaining community assets even during ownership transitions.
