LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- How does it feel to have the two head coaches of the two biggest football programs in the commonwealth both be former quarterbacks at your high school? That is the case for Trinity now that Will Stein has been named the new head coach at Kentucky, joining another Shamrock alum in Louisville Head Coach Jeff Brohm.

"We're thrilled about it," said Trinity head coach Jay Cobb. "We've been proud of him for a long time. One of the neat things about coaching here at Trinity is when you get a win or something goes in the program you get a text from him. You get a text from Jeff Brohm or Brian (Brohm), those guys and it's always a neat thing to happen as a coach that you have those doors open to you."

Cobb and this year's Shamrocks are preparing for Saturday's state 6A final against unbeaten South Warren. Trinity is bidding for a third consecutive championship while the Spartans have successfully bumped up a class after winning the 5A title last season.

The Rocks are playing their best football of the season and maybe of several seasons, with seven straight wins including a 50-7 rout of rival St. Xavier last Friday.

"I feel like our whole team is just playing the best that we've ever played this season and my time being at Trinity, I think this is the best team we've ever had," said Junior quarterback Zane Johnson.

Johnson has completed 70 percent of his passes this season for 2763 yards and he has 51 touchdown passes and just 3 interceptions. He's excited about having another Trinity grad in charge of the school he grew up watching.

"I thought that was some big news. I hope he's interested in me."

Johnson went on to say that he has thought about going into the coaching world if football doesn't work out long term.

For now he will try to make it 3-for-3 in state championships as Trinity's starting quarterback. The matchup with South Warren is Saturday in Lexington at 4:00 pm.

There are two other area schools bidding for state football titles this weekend. KCD trying for its first when they meet Raceland for the 1A championship Friday at Noon. And Christian Academy is trying to close out an undefeated season and win a fourth consecutive state 3A title Saturday at Noon against Murray.
