LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's the final countdown for Thunder Over Louisville as crews from Zambelli Fireworks began setting thousands of fireworks in place Thursday on the 2nd Street Bridge.

The bridge that connects downtown Louisville to southern Indiana was completely shut down to traffic Thursday so tens of thousands of fireworks could be positioned for maximum effect.

After dozens of years of providing the ammunition for Thunder Over Louisville, the Zambelli crews have it down to a science. In fact, it's safe to say no one knows the job better than the Zambelli crew.

For the next few days, the job is both simple and complicated: get the of fireworks to Louisville, unload them on the 2nd Street Bridge and barges, then let the fire take care of the rest Saturday night.

"I got in it about three years ago down here on the Thunder crew," Jake Greene said. "I love doing it. I do it for the passion of the fireworks."

Setup for Thunder Over Louisville stretches far beyond just the fireworks. The entire bridge has to be outfitted with fiber optic cable to maintain a connection back to the ground to make sure the crowds can hear the soundtrack.

It's a lot of work, but come 9:30 p.m. Saturday, it'll all be worth it.
