LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most prominent and recognizable leaders of the Civil Right Movement - and is still making a difference in today's world.

Dr. Jemar Tisby visited WDRB Mornings on Monday to talk about Dr. King's legacy and how it shows up in today's day and age.

Dr. Tisby is a New York Times bestseller, a national speaker, and a history scholar in residence at Simmons College of Kentucky. In his interview, he expressed how much he liked to study and learn about Dr. King.

We all know that Dr. King was an activist as well as a civil rights leader, but what we may not know is that it all started with his faith.

Dr. King was a Christian and a preacher, growing up in the church and learning from his father. He was even ordained to the ministry by his own father at the age of 19.

Dr. King opposed racism, but that was only part of his platform. He studied the three evils - poverty, racism, and militarism.

He was frustrated with the wealth in the United States as it contrasted with poverty.

One of Dr. King's famous quotes was, "Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

Dr. Tisby said it was not a soft and mushy kind of love, but a love that's righteously angry at injustice.

"It was a kind of love that didn't want to crush your enemies or embarrass them, but wanted to redeem them so they can be more fully human as we ourselves try to be more fully human," Dr. Tisby said.
