NEWPORT, Ky. (WDRB) -- Cross the new Shark Bridge at the Newport Aquarium if you dare.
The recently opened Shark Bridge is a rope suspension bridge where guests can walk inches above the open water shark tank. Newport Aquarium's all-new Shark Bridge is the only attraction of its kind in North America.
The Shark Bridge is a 75-foot-long, V-shaped rope bridge crossing the exhibit's 385,000-gallon tank. More than 4 miles of rope was used to construct the Shark Bridge. The tank includes nearly two dozen sharks and the largest collection of scalloped hammerheads in North America.
Each of Newport Aquarium's scalloped hammerhead sharks were born in 2014 during the months of June and July near Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii, one of the most the most stable breeding grounds for the endangered species.
Over time, these juveniles will triple in size as adult scalloped hammerhead sharks can grow up to 14 feet in length and more than 300 pounds.
Shark Bridge is included with admission to Newport Aquarium.
The newly opened Canyon Falls exhibit is the new home to the Asian small-clawed otters, back by popular demand. Asian small-clawed otters are the smallest and most social otter species in the world. Canyon Falls also displays two species of lizard never before seen at Newport Aquarium. Â And it includes Thunder, a more than 100-year-old snapping turtle and Newport Aquarium's oldest resident.
