LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — WAKY radio has a rich history in the Louisville area.
WDRB's Keith Kaiser joins some WAKY fans before the Homecoming Concert.
The WAKY studios are returning to the Louisville area after more than 40 years.
July 15, 1958, marked the beginning of a new era in Louisville radio as WAKY signed on. Louisville listeners were introduced to a blend of rock 'n' roll and larger-than-life personalities.
From the late 1950s through the late 1970s, WAKY became the soundtrack of Louisville, dominating Kentuckiana with a mix of Top 40 hits and unforgettable contests.
Listeners connected with radio icons including Bill Baily, Jack Sanders, Weird Beard, Coyote Calhoun, Skinny Bobby Harper, Timothy L. Tyler, Bill Crisp, Gary Burbank, Dude Walker, Mason Lee Dixon, and Steven Lee Cook.
By the mid-1980s, the station had changed formats, the famous WAKY call letters left Louisville.
On May 11, 2007 at 5:00 p.m., WAKY returned to the Louisville airwaves on 103.5 FM with timeless music and the classic WAKY jingles. The studios were in Elizabethtown up until a few months ago. Now, they have returned to Louisville, and it's time to celebrate with a Homecoming Concert.
