LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Growing vegetables from start to finish and then eating or cooking with those veggies can provide a full-circle sense of accomplishment. But it can be defeating if you never get to that moment.

Jeff Wallitsch of Wallitsch Gardens is helping answer some viewer questions to keep your garden growing.

Question: Is there anything that prevents squash borer?

Wallitsch: So there's not anything that's necessarily going to prevent it. You just want to make sure that you notice the signs of the squash borer. A lot of it is wilting. What you can also do is wait a little later in planting your summer squash. If you do end up getting squash borer, so like mid-July or early August, put some new plants in and you won’t have to worry about the borer as much because they've already laid their eggs.

Question: What kind of fence or what do I use for cucumbers to grow on? And thoughts on vertical garden squash?

Wallitsch: What you can use for cucumbers, squash, or any type of vine is just your traditional tomato cage. Having them up in the air actually takes less space. And then also better air flow and you don't get as many insects or rot.

Question: I want to plant some radishes. Is it too late to plant?

Wallitsch: It is a little too late now. Radishes are going to be more of a cool season crop so you want to do that with your cold crops. Typically late February or early March and then you can do it again in the fall — late August or early September.
