Wildfire smoke from Canada. It's that simple. There are currently over 900 wildfires burning at the moment. We have westerly flow aloft, which means that smoke gets funneled into our area over the weekend. That's why the sky will have a hazy appearance. Smoke concentrations will remain elevated in the upper levels of our atmosphere through Monday so that shouldn't have an impact on air quality. Just keep in mind that could change.Â
Aside from the haze in the sky, at sunset and sunrise you will likely notice more of a red or orange tint to the sun. Why? The smoke particles actually scatter out the shorter wavelengths of light like yellow, blue, green and violet. However, longer wavelengths like red and orange can pass directly through the smoke layer giving you a fiery red sunrise/sunset!
