LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Sick of inflation and high prices everywhere? Wallitsch Gardens has some tips to save you money in the long run and garden on a budget.
- Plant perennials. They come back every year!
- Start with quart perennials, which are smaller versions of larger plants.
“And they’re not as expensive,” said Jeff Wallitsch of Wallitsch Gardens. “If you're patient and you want to start out small, these are great ways to save a couple bucks and you can watch and see it grow.”
- Starting with seeds is even cheaper, but requires more patience.
- Planting herbs and veggies will save you money at the grocery store.
“The herbs keep coming back after you cut them off to use,” said Jeff Wallitsch.
And here's a pro tip with your herbs -- if they start to flower, they will lose their taste. So don't let that happen.
"If you see any of your herbs start to flower, just go in and whack them all down," Wallitsch said. "The whole thing. Just chop them down and then they'll flush back out and leaf back out."
With greenery in your garden, it’s almost like having an onsite grocery store.
