LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some of the youngest residents in southern Indiana got a glimpse of court proceedings on Saturday.
Clark County Circuit Court 4 Judge Vicki Carmichael gave the oath to several children in what has become an annual event. The judge allows children to come in with their favorite stuffed animals and dolls and adopt them.
The children take an oath to promise to love and protect the toys. Two other judges also joined in.
One by one, the children walked in, held up their right hands and took the oath while their parents documented the gesture.
It was the first time the adoptions resumed since 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We're trying to instill in them that value that says 'hey this is something that I want to do, this is something important for me to take care of something and to be responsible for something,'" said Carmichael.
Some parents even took the oath. The children then got to take home a certificate of adoption for their favorite toys.
