LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Parks along the River Road corridor, including Champions Park, in Louisville could soon see some changes, and it's up to the community to help decide what those changes might be.

Mayor Craig Greenberg said he wants to hear from the public on how to make the parks along the Ohio River better. In fact, he wants public consideration for 391 acres of Metro-owned land along River Road, including six parks in total.

Right now at Champions Park, there is a large area for dogs, disc golf and running trails. But what could be added is up to the public. Possible changes include new playgrounds, concessions or bathrooms.

But because the park is in a flooding zone, building any structures could be difficult and risky.

"I think it is a great opportunity to better activate that space," Greenberg said last week. "It is a great park, in a great location so close to downtown. There's a lot going on around it."

The public is invited to two community meetings to give input on what they'd like to see at the park.

  • August 11 at the Lynn Family Training Facility near the park on Edith Road.

  • August 13 at Locust Grove
Both meetings begin at 6 p.m.

Community members can learn more about the visioning process and submit their ideas by visiting the River Road Land Use Vision Plan webpage. The survey opens August 11 and will close September 19.
