LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hundreds of children in southern Indiana do not live in safe, supportive homes, and there's a need for licensed foster families to bridge the gap.
That's why Family Ark in Jeffersonville is asking the community to consider becoming a foster parent. The nonprofit that provides foster care, transitional housing, and behavioral services for children has launched a new initiative to recruit new foster families according to a news release.
It's called "More Please: A Campaign for Foster Parent Recruitment," according to a news release from the organization.
The idea is to provide traumatized children with more of what they need: more love, more laughter, more hugs, more smiles and more support.
The hope is that individuals will realize being a foster parent is a privilege, not a burden, as they become a stable presence in a child's life. Without foster parents, children often end up lost in the system, placed far from their schools, communities and siblings.
They may also have to wait a long time to finally experience a stable home, undergoing multiple placement changes in the process. Research shows that can lead to an increase in the risk of academic failure, emotional distress, as well as long-term challenges such as homelessness or incarceration, according to the release.
"Foster care changes lives -- not just for the children, but for the families who say yes," Jeanean Jacobs, CEO of Family Ark, said in a written statement. "With More Please, we're inviting people to discover the unexpected joy, love, and purpose that fostering can bring. Our foster parents aren’t in this alone—we surround them with support, guidance, and a community that walks with them every step of the way. A little more love makes room for hope, healing, and connection—and that’s what every child deserves."
People who may be interested are encouraged to remember that being a good foster parent isn't about being perfect -- it's about being present. That's why Family Ark "provides robust wraparound support for foster families, including training, dedicated case managers, respite care, and a supportive peer community to walk alongside every step of the way."
Family Ark is located on Noah's Way, off Allison Lane in Jeffersonville. The phone number is 812-282-8479. CLICK HERE to find out more about becoming a foster parent. CLICK HERE to make a monetary donation.
