Kentucky Humane Society adoptable puppies

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Humane Society is waiving adoption fees in the first half of May.

The nonprofit is partnering with BISSELL Pet Foundation to waive adoption fees for all dogs one year and older. BISSELL Pet Foundation's national "Empty the Shelter" event goes from May 1-15.

Jefferson County residents are responsible for the $10.50 licensing fee, $10 leash/collar fees and donations are accepted. 

Adoption location and hours are as follows:

Kentucky Humane Society

  • Sam Swope Pet TLC, 241 Steedly Drive, will process adoption applications Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • East Campus, 1000 Lyndon Lane, will process adoption applications Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Closed May 9 & 10)

Hammer’s Lou Adopts - Saturday, May 10

  • Adoptable dogs and puppies from KHS will be at LOU Adopts! Mega Adoption Event at the Kentucky Exposition Center Pavilion, and applications will be processed from noon to 4 p.m.
  • KHS Sam Swope Pet TLC be open as normal and will process adoptions from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • KHS East Campus will be closed

Empty the Shelters has helped more than 323,00 pets find homes since 2016, according to a news release.

"Every time we host Empty the Shelters, it affirms the importance of this lifesaving program," Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, said in a news release. "During the two-week event in May, tens of thousands of pets of all kinds, many who've waited far too long, will find the loving homes they deserve. Empty the Shelters has created real momentum around adoption, helping our nation's overcrowded shelters save more lives."
