LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville police officers and firefighters extended a lifeline to seniors in the community Wednesday morning.

First responders came together to pack up a supply of shelf-stable meals for homebound seniors. Each box contains five meals.

The volunteers delivered them to local seniors in the Meals on Wheels program.

"I think it's a great opportunity to engage with our community and get to talk to them," said Gabriella Israel, an LMPD Traffic Control officer. "I mean, the elderly have given a lot to our community so I think it's a great experience for LMPD to give back to them."

The meals were delivered all across Jefferson County. Seniors can use them when bad weather hits and weekly meal delivery is suspended.

Meals on Wheels works to "help improve the lives of older adults by supporting good nutritional health and promoting their independence and well-being."

In addition to the Meals on Wheels program, Louisville provides congregate and group nutrition sites for seniors age 60 and older to go to 16 neighborhood locations to eat, socialize and participate in activities.
