LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg is partnering with Dare to Care for a food drive to help local families as federal food aid faces disruption.
The drive is meant to help local pantries support residents affected by the federal government shutdown.
“We cannot let children or seniors go hungry,” Greenberg said in a news release. “We’re stepping up to make sure that doesn’t happen here in Louisville.”
More than 84,000 residents rely on SNAP benefits, which could be interrupted Nov. 1. Federal workers in the city are also going without pay.
Greenberg added that local food pantries are already under strain due to rising grocery costs.
Food donations will be accepted at upcoming events:
- Boo at the Zoo, Thursday, Oct. 30, 5–9 p.m., Louisville Zoo
- Thru the Ville 5K, Saturday, Nov. 1, 9–11 a.m., 2550 S. Floyd St.
- Throo the Boo 2025, Saturday, Nov. 1, 6–8 p.m., Louisville Zoo
Officials encouraged residents to donate nonperishable items to help families and seniors in need during the federal funding disruption.
