LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A stretch of South Preston Highway now has a new name designed to celebrate Louisville's Hispanic and Latino heritage.
City officials on Tuesday unveiled "La Villa Lou," a designation chosen through a community voting process that began last October.
The name recognizes the businesses, traditions and contributions that have helped shape the area and aims to introduce more residents and visitors to the neighborhood.
"As an immigrant and business owner I feel very proud to see our community being recognized in this great project La Villa Lou so it will help many more people discover the diversity of businesses that exist in this corridor," said Margarita Coro, owner of Sweet Havana.
The designation was selected after months of community input and voting. Supporters hope it will encourage people from across Louisville to explore the area's restaurants, shops and businesses.
"That is why I have always believed that when we share traditions, culture and values we grow much more as a community," Coro said.
The city also unveiled the first mural tied to the initiative, marking the beginning of a broader effort to showcase Hispanic heritage through public art.
Metro Government plans to add more murals and installations in the future as part of the initiative.
