LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville mother and son were arrested Friday in connection to a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a man trying to cross Bardstown Road last weekend.
Aubrey Bald, 26, is accused of being the first of two drivers who hit 29-year-old Kevin Mutabazi on June 28. Bald's mother, 44-year-old Travonne Smith, was also arrested in connection to the crash.
Louisville Metro Police said officers responded around 4:49 a.m. that morning to the 4500 block of Bardstown Road, just north of Breckenridge Lane, after a reported collision involving a pedestrian.
Police said Mutabazi wasn't in a crosswalk when he tried to walk across Bardstown Road and was hit by a southbound car. A second car then hit him while he was still on the ground, LMPD said. The driver of the second vehicle stopped and called 911.
Mutabazi was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the arrest citation, detectives identified Bald through surveillance video and interviews. Police said Bald admitted he hit Mutabazi but did not stop and instead drove home.
The citation also said Bald left the car and keys with his mother, Smith, after he told her what happened. Smith then got other family members involved, police said, to move the vehicle before it was later destroyed in an attempt to hide the evidence.
Bald was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, failure to report a traffic accident and falsely reporting an incident to law enforcement. Smith was charged with complicity to tampering with physical evidence and complicity to obstructing or interfering with an officer.
Bald appeared in court Saturday and plead not guilty. His bond was set at $150,000. He's scheduled to appear in court next on July 13 for a preliminary hearing.
