LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Irish tradition returns to Louisville this weekend.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians will host their 52nd annual St. Patrick's Parade in the Highlands neighborhood this Saturday, March 8.

Often called the "people's parade," thousands are expected to line the route that starts at Baxter Avenue and Broadway, and heads down Bardstown Road. More than 100 floats and participants are expected again for this year's edition of the parade.

The festivities got started Thursday, ahead of the parade, with the Blessing of The Beer at Goodwood Tap Room. A special ceremony beforehand blessed a limited edition beer that Goodwood released in preparation for the parade.

Fr. Gary Padgett blessed the beer this year, followed by a Tapping of the Keg at O'Shea's Irish Pub on Baxter Avenue.

The Hibernians give the money generated by the festival back to the community through its nonprofit, the Hibernian Cultural and Charitable Association, which puts on the annual parade.

A St. Patrick's Parade Mass is scheduled from 12-1:30 p.m. Saturday ahead of the parade at St. Brigid Catholic Church on Hepburn Avenue. After mass, the Hibernians will award the Irish Person of the Year and winners of a coloring contest. The Irish Person of the Year will serve as the Grand Marshal of the parade. The honoree is chosen by AOH officers and members.

The parade is scheduled to start around 3 p.m., rain or shine, with festivities going on through 8 p.m., including food and drinks.
