LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Irish tradition was celebrated on Saturday in the Highlands.

The 51st Ancient Order of Hibernians' St. Patrick's Parade went down Baxter Avenue and Bardstown Road as thousands of people lined the streets. The parade with more than 100 floats and participants started at the intersection of Broadway and Baxter Avenue, and traveled down Bardstown Road to Windor Place.

"It's about friends, seeing what floats are in the parade each year, what the bars are doing, what specials they have, what kind of fun sights you're going to see," said Ashlynn Ackerman, who attended the parade.

Attendees were treated to hand outs like candy, green beads, coins and more from people walking in the parade.

"Different ages, different backgrounds, everybody just hanging out having a good time," said attendee Alex Hoffmann.

The parade also gives businesses in the Highlands the chance to showcase their offerings to parade-goers.

John Chamberlain was honored as 2024 Irish Person of the Year and Parade Grand Marshall.

The Hibernian Cultural and Charitable Association, a local nonprofit, fundraises for the event for charitable giving. For more information about this year's parade, click here.

St. Patrick's Day is Sunday, March 17 this year.
