'Sensory Kits' now available through Louisville Free Public Library

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg announced a new resource Tuesday for youth who are neurodivergent and learn differently.

Sensory Kits are now available from the Louisville Free Public Library.

There are two types of kits. One will be offered for a sensory experience while in the library. The other kits can be borrowed by families to take home.

"Our libraries are busy every day providing programs and services that help support the education and social development of children across Louisville Metro," Greenberg said in a news release.

LFPL officials said the in-library sensory kits are "designed to help children regulate their sensory needs."

All library branches have the kits, which include noise-canceling headphones and fidget toys. Officials said those items can make a difference in how youth experience the library.

"This is a great way to continue making our libraries a welcoming environment for every child in Louisville," Greenberg said during a Tuesday news conference.

Take-home sensory kits each have a different theme, such as bedtime, animals, music, textures and more. They also include sensory toys, tools, engaging books and guides to suggest different ways families can use and benefit from the materials in the kit.

The kits have a 21-day checkout period and a limit of two kits per person at a time.
