LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Parklands of Floyds Fork is growing.
Broad Run Park is set to double in size in 2024, adding 508 acres of land that sits just adjacent to it, making it the largest single land acquisition in the history of The Parklands. Broad Run Park is located on Bardstown Road just south of Interstate 265.
The Parklands of Floyds Fork is growing in 2024.
The Parklands is also adding 156 acres in two additional places, totaling out to 664 acres of new parkland.
These additions will help ensure that the community will receive continued access to nature in our county, as it is rapidly developing.
"When we set out to create a connected system of parks two decades ago, our purpose was driven by Frederick Law Olmsted's approach to ensure growing communities set aside space and are intentional about providing opportunities to connect to nature through the creation of public parks, accessible to all," Dan Jones, founder and chairman of The Parklands, said in a news release on Monday. “These new acquisitions allow us to further extend that vision and continue to better serve the people of our region.”
These additions bring The Parklands total size to over 4,000 acres. The newly added property stretches into Bullitt County, and will feature a roiling terrain with a mix of wooded spaces, grasslands, and wildflowers.
The additional acreage is also home to many Kentucky glade cress sites, an endangered wildflower species found nowhere outside of the state.
The area will be closed to the public until it is ready to open.
