LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Sovereignty crossed the muddy finish line first in the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Saturday in front of a crowd of 147,406.

Sovereignty, ridden by Junior Alvarado, is trained by William Mott and owned by Godolphin.

Journalism came in second followed by Baeza and Final Gambit.

Heading into the race, Journalism was the favorite with closing odds of 7/2, followed by Sandman at 5-1 and Luxor Cafe at 8-1.

Those at the Derby were brave with their bets.

Rodriquez was one of the early favorites this week but was scratched Thursday.

In the 151st running of the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, Good Cheer roared down a sloppy tack to remain undefeated.

La Cara held the lead for most of the race, but Good Cheer, who's trained by Brad Cox and went off as an overwhelming 7-5 favorite, took the lead at the top of the stretch after being forced five wide at the turn.

Good Cheer improves to a perfect 7-for-7 in her racing career with the win. This was the third win in the Kentucky Oaks for Cox.
