LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — While many people lose money betting on the Kentucky Derby, for some neighbors near Churchill Downs — it’s one of the most profitable times of the year.

In the neighborhoods surrounding the track, especially those with larger yards, Derby week means transforming their lawns into makeshift parking lots—a side hustle that pays off.

“We got the front here and we can get about six in here,” said Larry Snyder, who lives near the backside of Churchill Downs. “And the side gate, if it don't rain, we can get another 10 or 15 in there.”

Snyder has been offering up his property for parking for 50 years. He used to park the cars himself, but these days, the proceeds go straight to his grandchildren who do it for him.

Prices typically range from $30 to $50 per car depending on proximity to the track and the day of the event.

Along with yard parking, many Derby-goers also rely on golf cart drivers to get to the gates. Derick Bunch, who works with 502 Blue Collar Pressure Washing, spends the week shuttling guests from their cars to the track entrance.

“Just ride around and meet different people,” Bunch said. “Give everybody a good welcome. ‘Welcome to Louisville, Kentucky, and the Kentucky Derby.’ I enjoy meeting and seeing different people.”

Bunch said in five days, he can make up to $6,000 in tips. Local organizations, including the nearby Veterans of Foreign Wars post, also join in by offering golf cart rides.

For many in the area, the first week of May is more than just a tradition—it’s a business opportunity.
