LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a police shooting stemming from a domestic violence call in Louisville's Portland neighborhood Thursday night.
Louisville Metro Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said officers were called to a home in the 400 block of North 24th Street around 8:45 p.m. on the report of a domestic incident.
The caller told dispatchers a family member was pointing a gun at people in the home, including a child, and said they believed the person was "intoxicated on possible narcotics."
Once on scene, police heard loud arguing coming from a room upstairs, Gwinn-Villaroel said. Officers "attempted to have a conversation" with the individuals in the room.
The chief said as the situation escalated, officers forced entry, and shots were fired. It's unclear whether officers were already in the home and forced entry into the room, or were outside and forced entry into the home.
Officers recovered firearms in the room and rendered emergency aid to two individuals. One person died at the scene, Gwinn-Villaroel said, and the other was taken to UofL Hospital in critical condition.
Gwinn-Villaroel said there is no additional threat.
"Again, I am asking Louisville if we would truly come together and work together to fight this violent crime, individuals in possession of guns in our city that should not be in possession of them," she said. "This must stop. I'm pleading for your help this evening."
Body camera footage of the shooting will be released within 10 business days, per the department's new protocol, the chief said.
