LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Several lanes of Interstate 64 West near Interstate 265 in Louisville were closed for several hours Monday evening after a crash that left one dead and two others injured.
According to Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Aaron Ellis, the crash "involving several vehicles" happened around 4:50 p.m. Monday just before the Gene Snyder.
Based on information from witnesses, police believe traffic in the westbound lanes had slowed due to heavy congestion and construction. That's when a semitruck in the center lane hit a pickup truck, causing a chain reaction with five vehicles involved and damaged, Ellis said.
The driver and only occupant of the pickup truck, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two adults from one of the other vehicles were taken to University Hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening. The driver of the semi was not hurt and no other injuries were reported, Ellis said.
LMPD's Traffic Unit is handling the investigation.
One lane of I-64 West reopened just before 6 p.m., and all lanes had reopened by 8:15 p.m.
