LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An off-duty Louisville Metro Police officer died in a motorcycle crash involving a semitruck Sunday on Interstate 265 near Interstate 71, closing all southbound lanes for hours.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the motorcyclist as 29-year-old Anthony Elliott.
The department said officers responded to a crash involving a motorcycle and a semi-truck near the I-265 and I-71 interchange just before 10 p.m. Sunday. Investigators said Elliott was thrown from the bike during the crash and died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, police said.
Police said the motorcycle became lodged beneath the semi-truck's axles and caught fire. Firefighters with Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS extinguished the flames.
LMPD released the following statement Monday morning regarding the officer's death:
"LMPD is mourning the loss of 4th Division Officer Anthony Elliott, who died following a motorcycle crash last evening. Officer Elliott served the Louisville Metro Police Department with dedication and commitment to the community. His loss is deeply felt by his fellow officers, civilian employees, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him. The department is focused on supporting Officer Elliott’s family and members of the LMPD family as they navigate this tremendous loss. Additional information regarding arrangements and opportunities to honor Officer Elliott will be released as it becomes available."
All parties involved remained on scene and no other injuries were reported.
