LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Two people were taken to the hospital after a fire at a senior living facility in Middletown.
According to MetroSafe, the call came in a little before 6 p.m. Sunday for a fire at Arcadia Senior Living, 901 Blankenbaker Parkway. That's across from Southeast Christian Church.
Anchorage Middletown Fire Chief Pat Walsh said when crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the building. Firefighters evacuated and accounted for all 65 residents who live in the facility.
Walsh said two people were taken to the hospital, one for minor smoke inhalation and the other for a medical condition. Their conditions are not known at this time.
Walsh said about 9 p.m. Sunday crews were trying to get control of the fire and the scene is still active. More than 50 firefighters, 15 fire units, several local fire companies and seven ambulances were on scene of the blaze.
The senior living facility is working to contact resident's families, and a reunification area for families has been set up at Southeast Christian Church's parking lot across the street from the facility.
In an update Monday, officials said the incident was under control shortly after midnight, and crews remained on scene until 6 a.m. Monday.
"This incident presented significant challenges, including high winds that contributed to fire spread, as well as complex rescue and evacuation operations to ensure the safety of all residents," Deputy Chief Mike Sutt said.
One of the two people sent to the hospital has since been released, while the second remains under care, Sutt said.
Officials said 67 residents were displaced. Of those individuals, 11 were relocated to another building also owned by Arcadia. The remaining residents were reunited with their family members with the help from Southeast Christian Church and TARC.
A restoration company began assessing the damage Monday. The goal is to determine when it will be safe for residents to return home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
