LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- As temperatures drop, the Louisville Water Company is reminding people how to protect pipes in their home.
WDRB meteorologists have forecasted temperatures in Louisville to drop into the teens over the next few days. Pipes freezing can be a problem because water expands as it freezes, putting pressure on metal or plastic pipes.
Here are some tips to protect home's pipes include:
- Wrap exposed pipes with insulating materials
- Cover outside vents of crawl spaces
- Close garage doors if a home has a slab foundation because some pipes are under concrete floors in the garage
- Run a small, steady stream of water and open cabinet doors to allow heat to circulate around pipes during extremely cold weather
- Know where your home's main water shutoff valve is located in case pipes burst
Louisville surpassed nine inches of snow on Sunday, making it the third snowiest calendar day ever recorded in the month of January. It is the snowiest calendar day since Feb. 4, 1998, according to WDRB meteorologist Marc Weinberg.
Thousands of people were left without power in the Louisville area as a winter storm moved through the region. During a news briefing Monday morning, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said 93,000 people lost power during the height of the storm. The online LG&E/KU power outage map indicated just over 12,000 customers were still without electricity by late afternoon.
