LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The winter storm is making travel very hazardous in Louisville and the surrounding area.Â
Road conditions
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said it will take time to clear the roads. In a social media post, he said it takes about six hours to treat roads in Jefferson County, and it takes 12 hours to plow roadways.Â

Here is the latest update from Louisville Metro Public Works from spokesman Sal Melendez.Â
11 a.m. Sunday
Metro’s Snow Team, reported in at 6 a.m. They have been treating the 110 snow routes in the Metro since about 6:30 with salt and calcium chloride to keep roads in safe driving condition. Adding calcium chloride to the mix increases is done when temperatures drop to 25 degrees or lower to maintain treatment efficacy.
The team will be working 12-hour shifts to ensure we maintain around-the-clock road treatment for the duration of this weather event.
We ask that you avoid unnecessary travel, but if you must, here’s what you as a driver can do to help our team during snow/icy conditions:
- Slow down, don’t rush – approach roads with caution, as they may be icy and slippery
- Plan ahead – give yourself ample to time, by at least doubling the time it usually takes to get there during normal weather
- Look out for snow plows and give our Snow Team room to work – Snow plows are big and bulky, and sudden maneuvers around them create additional hazards
Reporting car crashes in LouisvilleÂ
Interstates around Louisville have had multiple accidents in the initial round of snow from the winter storm.Â
Louisville Metro Police declared on Sunday morning that anyone involved in a minor or non-injury crash should report it online. Here's the information posted by LMPD along with a link to file a report:Â
Due to the ongoing snow and weather event here in the Metro Louisville area. We are now operating on Online Reporting Forms. That means if you are involved in a NON-INJURY collision you will need to use the Online Reporting forms that are provided by Kentucky State Police.
It is very user friendly to fill out and you can even do it on your phone. If you are involved in a non-injury and can safely get the vehicles off the roadway, please do so.
Again, we remind you to make sure to exchange names and information between you and the other driver. If you can safely document the damage via your cell phone, please do so and continue.
If you are involved in a non-injury collision and are blocking a roadway, please contact dispatch via the non-emergency line at 574-7111 to advise them of your situation and we will respond as soon as possible.
