LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A principal at the Academy @ Shawnee who is under investigation has been reassigned.

Last week, parents were sent a letter that said "Hollie Smith is being reassigned to another position in the district."

The school's website has her listed as an executive principal for grades 6-12. Jefferson County Public Schools told Smith in a letter in March that she was being reassigned and could not have contact with staff, Shawnee parents or students.

Smith also cannot be on the high school's campus.

According to JCPS, former Academy @ Shawnee principal Joni Britt, who resigned in May, is also under investigation.

In the resignation letter, Britt said, "After much reflection, I have decided it is time for me to step away as the increasing stress of the position, the feeling that I can no longer effectively lead or make decisions without fear of grievance or conflict, and the overall uncertainty surrounding the future of the building leadership have led me to make this difficult decision. While this choice was not made lightly, I believe it is the right decision for me personally and professionally at this time."

Joni Britt resigned from the Academy @ Shawnee and is under investigation.

JCPS did not clarify what the investigations are about. The letter says Sade McKnight will step in immediately to serve as the temporary leader of the campus.

According to JCPS, its long-term plan is to split campus leadership at the school. McKnight will serve as the middle school principal and a new hire will focus on the high school.

The full letter sent home to families can be read below:

Dear Shawnee Families:

"I am writing to share some important updates regarding the leadership structure at Shawnee as we prepare for the upcoming school year.

Hollie Smith is being reassigned to another position in the district. To ensure a smooth transition and continuous support for our students, Sade McKnight will step in immediately to serve as the temporary leader of the campus.

We will look to move rapidly and will begin advertising for a High School Principal immediately. Your perspective as parents and families is critical to this process, so a survey will be sent out shortly to gather your feedback on the qualities and characteristics you would like to see in the next leader. Please take a few moments to share your thoughts once it arrives.

Looking ahead to the 2026–2027 school year, our long-term plan is to split campus leadership to provide more focused support for both school levels. Under this new structure, Sade McKnight will serve as the Middle School Principal, and the newly hired leader will focus exclusively on the High School.

While leadership transitions bring changes, our top priority remains maintaining stability and ensuring a high-quality educational experience for your children. We are committed to a swift, transparent process to set Shawnee up for an incredible year ahead, and we thank you for your continued partnership and support."

Sincerely,

Nate Meyer

Assistant Superintendent of ESZ
