LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A bald eagle rescued by Indiana State Police after being hit by a vehicle while eating roadkill Saturday in Washington County died despite efforts by multiple organizations.

According to Indiana State Police, Trooper Nathan Teusch saw the eagle on State Road 60 near Salem and stopped to help until a conservation officer arrived.

The eagle suffered broken bones and was taken to Hardy Lake near Scottsburg for further care, police said.

Nature's Nest Wildlife Rehabilitation, a southern Indiana nonprofit that helps wildlife, said in a Facebook post that Hardy Lake asked whether it could take in the bald eagle.

The organization did not have the equipment needed for the eagle's long-term rehabilitation, but it was able to take her to Raptors Rise Rehabilitation Center for specialized care.

Officials said the eagle suffered a severe wing fracture, began having seizures and died shortly after arriving.

"It is always heartbreaking to lose a patient, especially such a magnificent bird," Nature's Nest Wildlife Rehabilitation said in a social media post. "Bald eagles face many dangers every day, including vehicle strikes while scavenging along our roadways. Rest easy, beautiful girl. We are so sorry we couldn't save you...

"A huge thank you to Jared at Hardy Lake for reaching out and doing everything possible to get her help, and to Lola at Raptor Rise for being ready to take her and provide specialized care. It truly takes a network of dedicated people working together to give wildlife the best possible chance, even when the outcome isn't what we hoped for. Every effort matters."
