LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- After playing the Kentucky Lottery for 40 years, a Bardstown man won more than half a million dollars on Friday, the 13th.
The man, who asked to remain anonymous, won $510,000 by playing Kentucky 5 jackpot online.
"I’ve been playing for 40 years, so it’s about time," he joked to Kentucky Lottery officials. "When I saw the jackpot was hit, I checked my email spam folder because I had heard that had happened to another winner recently. I saw an email that said I had won, and I thought, 'I think I won.'"
He showed his wife the email while they were having a morning coffee.
"I about spit out my coffee. I just said, 'What did you play? What did you play?' I couldn’t believe it," his wife said. "We sat there for two hours checking the numbers over and over again."
The win came on Friday, the 13th, a day typically believed to be unlucky.
"I usually steer away from the number 13 but not now," he said.
He received $364,650 after taxes. The couple plans to remodel their home, so the winnings will help pay for it as they near retirement.
The winner plans to keep playing Kentucky Lottery.
"I’m still playing and now I want to win more. I played this morning before we came here," he said. "And I check my spam folder a lot more often, too."
