LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The first new hospital to be built in west Louisville in well over a century is welcoming the community into the construction process.

Three beams that were signed by neighbors over the past year will be placed for display outside of the community room at the Norton West Louisville Hospital.

The first beam was placed Wednesday morning, symbolizing the importance of this being the first hospital built west of Ninth Street in over 150 years.

Vernice Mitchell, a hospital employee with special ties to the area, was the last person to sign the beam.

"It's home," she said. "I grew up in the Shawnee neighborhood, born and raised. I went to Central High School. My first job was across the street at the Kroger. My grandchildren go to the school next door. And so, this is my community."

The hospital is scheduled to open on Nov. 11.
