Learn the ancient techniques of forging from Craig Kaviar in his Beginner Blacksmithing class.
Kaviar will hold a class beginning May 11 and meeting consecutive Saturday mornings 9 a.m. to noon until June 8.
The five week class gives everyone, a chance to work with their hands, build hooks, nails and a fireplace poker. Though hard work, the class is open to people of all ages and has been enjoyed by men and women with a huge range of previous experience.
Craig Kaviar engages the class with the history of blacksmithing and hands-on demonstrations. Various tools include his seven foot-tall band saw, lathe, stacks of metal rod and pipe, several traditional anvils, and a myriad of tongs and hammers. His main forge substitutes the typical coal with waste vegetable oil, a carbon-neutral alternative.
Craig Kaviar's artwork appears at The Kentucky Center, First Unitarian Church, KMAC, Norton Hospital, Christ Church Cathedral, and the Jewish Community Center.
