LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A power plant along the Ohio River in New Albany is coming down.
The boiler house at Duke Energy's Gallagher Station will be imploded sometime this weekend. But the exact day and time are being kept under wraps.
"So for the safety and security of the site, we're not disclosing the exact specific timing of the implosion at this time," McKenzie Barbknecht, a spokesperson for Duke Energy, said. "We're really working in close coordination with local law enforcement agencies, emergency management, to make sure that it goes off in a way that's safe and secure for people who live near the plant."
Some New Albany neighbors will be able to see and hear the implosion. Nearby homes and businesses are being sent letters making them aware.
The tall chimneys that can be seen for miles will not be part of the implosion. They will be taken down manually over the next several months.
Officials said the controlled implosion is weather permitting and could be rescheduled if necessary. For safety and security reasons, there will be no public viewing areas for the implosion.
Gallagher Station powered up in the 1950s and was retired in June 2021. Duke Energy has been gradually shutting the plant down for several years.
