LOUISVILLE, Ky. – If your refrigerator, dishwasher or other household appliance started acting up during the busy holiday season, you may be wondering whether it’s worth repairing — or time to replace it.

Consumer experts say the decision often comes down to cost and availability of parts. An appliance repair professional says if a repair costs close to half the price of a new appliance, replacement may be the smarter option. Another red flag: if replacement parts are hard to find or no longer manufactured, repairs may not last.

Some homeowners have learned the hard way after paying hundreds of dollars for fixes that didn’t solve the problem, leaving them with both a broken appliance and an empty wallet.

Experts recommend getting clear estimates upfront and weighing the age of the appliance before committing to repairs. If replacement is the better choice, shopping holiday sales — including Presidents Day weekend — could help save money in the long run.
