LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Reaching customer service agents can be tough since many companies don't even list phone numbers anymore. Now, Amazon has released a warning about a new surge in fake customer service lines.
A woman recently fell for the scam when she saw a few items posted for sale on Facebook Marketplace. The so-called buyer replied almost instantly to her and told her to download a code to verify her identity.
Being suspicious, she decided to call Facebook customer service for help. She started googling around for numbers and called the first one she found.
Turns out, it wasn't really Facebook customer service and was a scammer posing as that.
More and more companies are now being impersonated, and even Amazon has seen a 33% increase in customer service impersonation scams.
Officials say searching for a phone number anywhere other than a company's website could lead to trouble, such as look-alike websites and fake phone numbers.
Instead, go through their website for help and always be aware of what is being asked of you.
