LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Many companies these days are bringing employees back to the office, but a lot of workers would prefer to spend more time working remotely.
The result - scammers with fake work-from-home jobs.
One woman was laid off after being at her job for 10 years, and was in desperate need of work.
She began searching on LinkedIn and other job hunting sites and found the perfect position.
She applied for a Business Operations Manager position. The company was legitimate, they had a website, and it was all work-from-home.
She was selected for the position, but her first assignment confused her. The company wanted her to cash a check for $2,400.
The company's name was real - but the job offer was not.
It's called the Fake Check Scam. You will be asked to cash a check, then send some of it back to start your employment.
When it bounces - and it will - you will be out hundreds of dollars.
Some red flags to watch out for:
- No face-to-face interview
- An "international" company
- Receiving a check before starting work
Almost every legitimate job site is being targeted by scammers every day.
